Sometimes life isn’t fair. In fact scratch that… most of the time life isn’t fair. This is why the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the people who need a miracle are rarely the ones who receive it. If you’re currently in debt, then you’ll probably be familiar with these concepts.
But the question to ask is why this is the case, and why we tend to get stuck on ‘one course’ when it comes to our financial well-being. The poor get poorer of course because they get forced to take out lots of loans and end up missing repayments. And the rich get richer because they have more money to invest and the flexibility to wait for the better jobs. They also tend to come from backgrounds that afford them better opportunities and educations.
But then at the same time, this isn’t the only effect that’s coming into play. Ever heard of the ‘law of attraction’? It explains why simply looking wealthier will make you wealthier. Read on…
Why Looking Rich Makes You Rich
You might think that it would make sense to give nicer gifts to your poorer friends. But then again, is that what you actually do? Think for a moment, and you’ll probably find that you spend more on the friends who already have more money. The reason is firstly because those people are the people who ‘have everything’ and who we need to get more creative with when choosing gifts. At the same time, it’s because they probably gave us a more expensive gift last year and can afford to reciprocate with a more expensive gift next year. Thus looking richer and being richer gets you nicer stuff at Christmas.
That’s one example, another might be negotiating the price of a piece of jewellery or for a loan. Of course cheaper loans go to people with a better financial record (richer people), but they also go to people who look richer. Whether they admit it or not, most people who give out loans will have some leeway when it comes to using their own discretion and will try to judge whether they think you can pay back the loan based on a range of factors… including the make of that watch.
Likewise you’ll get a better deal on a nice ring if you need one less. Why? Because the jeweller is hoping to secure your future business – whereas if you look poor, they don’t need your future business.
There are countless other examples too, from the jobs people give you to your ability to sell goods as a salesperson. You’ll even attract wealthier partners if you look wealthier!
So knowing this, what do you do differently? Well you shouldn’t change yourself too much, but what all this does tell you is that it doesn’t hurt to look your best when going on a date, to an interview or even a party. Getting that facia, manicure and haircut first will help.
But most importantly? It will give you the confidence to act well-off which will be even more potent in persuading those you do business with that you’re worth impressing.
